Beach Bum
Rest and relaxation have been the inspiration in the remastering of this beech wood Parker Knoll. As the British do love to be beside the seaside, a very fitting striped deck chair patterned fabric has been chosen to complement the surf board shaped armrests. The wooden frame has been hand sanded back to its natural colour which is reminiscent of our beautiful cornish beaches. Junk Gypsies are proud to deliver you a slice of British to be seated in all year round.

Resurrected Soldier
Resurrected Soldier
Reminiscent of a WW2 solider suffering with trench foot was this stable door when discovered on a farm in Yorkshire. After undergoing a causality evacuation to the Junk Gypsies operating theatre this soldiers time on front line duty was over. After being washed and prepped for surgery it was obvious to see that this beautiful relic was made by true craftsmen some eighty plus years ago. Individual planks of pine were measured, cut, shaped and finished by a master carpenter. A simple but exquisite lock was then crafted and positioned to finish his work. Four hand forged, folded and shaped sets of hinges were then commissioned by a black smith in order to finish their functional masterpiece.
Now in need of extensive surgery we set about fixing him up. After many, many, many hours in theatre we managed to save all of his enduring features. Now immortalised under a ten millimetre sheet of toughened glass this solider wears all his battle scars with the same pride as his hand calved lock and forged hinged medals obtained for his long and distinguished service. Both blacksmith and carpenter of the same period once crafted the scaffold trestles now repurposed for the legs of this enigmatic piece in order for this solider’s new service. Serving as a constant reminder that a family that eats together stays together. May you eat, drink and laugh for many years in his company.

Richard Hick and Sons were a wine merchants dating back to 1881. Warehouses located on commercial court, Briggate, Leeds close to the river Aire is were this story began. The river provided the transportation links to the once great canal system that spanned the length and breath of the country and is the most likely way this wonderful relic came to rest in a potato storage shed in Gloustershire. With the exception of the 1960’s legs the entire structure of this regal upcycle has been made from the original crate. With his enigmatic profile even at a distance you know this little chap has pedigree.

Britain is undergoing its very own "hand made" renaissance and the spot light is well and truly focused upon the independent craftsman once more. Like the craftsmen of yesteryear we focus our emphasis on quality not quantity. Whether working on patchwork chairs or chopping boards we endeavour to deliver unique, functional, robust, quality hand made products. Products that will hold value and still function when personal tastes change and the owner comes to resell. Furniture that will withstand the greatest test of all, time.
At Junk Gypsies we hand make and/or upholster each piece using only salvage. This allows us to mix styles, genres, textures, colours and materials such as metal, wood, glass and fabric to create our unique Junk Gypsies signature. Using salvage also underpins our environmental beliefs keeping our carbon foot print close to zero. Salvage and skilled hands provide the body for our pieces but it is our design that breathes life into our creations giving them a soul. As Junk Gypsies we are responsible for ensuring each piece has a personality, its own style and story. Each piece has already had a life, a function and a death and therefore a history. We consider it our duty to preserve as much of that history as we can to pass on to you.
We often get asked the question what is a Junk Gypsy to which the reply is, almost, always the same.
A Junk Gypsy is someone whose ears spike up like a fox on the hunt when they hear someone in the room utter the words scrap, waste or rubbish. A Junk Gypsy is someone who willingly, time and time again, suffers the wrath of there boss because the lure of a skip they have seen on the way to work proved to much to pass by without jumping in head first, making them late yet again. A Junk Gypsy is a person who possesses the ability to see through rust, dust and rot to the function and beauty of an object. Junk Gypsies are visionary, have a go at, wood, metal, fabric, paint and patch working, inspirational, motivational, new age retro hippy, agricultural and industrial salvage saving, tip and skip diving, bespoke, refurbishing, reclaiming, restoring and reincarnating, helping save the planet in style, free spirited, fun loving guys and gals.
